I don’t know why I did it, was I right in doing it?

A few days back days back Macabreday’s band, Rusty Moe was playing in the city and I was supposed to reach by 8. I was already half an hour late and auto guys were refusing to take me to Kyra despite me offering them double the usual rate at 8:30pm. Unbelievable no?

That being the case, I decided to walk rather than waste time on autorickshawbots. As I walked, I saw an auto guy buying some vegetables from an old vegetable vendor. He was selling vegetables from a push cart which was as old as him. HIs clothes were faded and wrinkled much like his face. A towel tied around his head like a turban hid his baldness and next to his stood the auto guy, wearing a smart neatly pressed shirt and well combed hair. He saw me, saw my quizzical look and popped the big question. “Saar, auto saar?” They think people fall for the repetitive ‘saar’ call, what he doesn’t realise is that people are desperate for an auto that will take them to their destination that the saar call doesn’t make a difference at all.

I replied with a nod and asked him if he would take me to Indiranagar flyover. Remember it’s only minimum charge from my house, but he wanted Rs25 and I was desperate. I agreed.

He told me to sit in the auto till he finished buying vegetables. As I got in, I heard him arguing with the old vendor. Turns out, the old man gave him a bill of Rs22, but he was ready to pay only 20. What a hypocrite; I thought and I would have left it at that if not for what followed.

The old man took off his towel, he said he was begging and asked him to please give him two rupees more. He was on his knees now and the auto guy still wouldn’t budge. After five minutes of pleading, he reluctantly gave away two rupees and cribbed about it as he started the auto.

Now I wanted to teach this guy a lesson, I am not the vengeful kind, but what he did back there really broke my heart. So as soon as we reached our destination, I gave him exactly two rupees short — Rs23. He looked confused then I told him that I did not have change and that, that’s all I had. I could not find the desperation of the old man in his eyes, all I could see was arrogance. He rolled up his sleeves and started telling me about our verbal agreement that I would pay him Rs25. I stuck to my line — that’s all I have.

He was starting to crack now, he still wasn’t desperate, but frustrated. He looked like the kind who would have given me a thrashing if it was an isolated place. But I was in Indiranagar, there were vehicles flying past, people staring at the commotion and he just didn’t know what to do.

Then I did what I had to do, “You want two rupee more right?” I said. “Yes”, he replied. “Then listen carefully, start respecting people, because you be mean to someone it comes back to you some point of life or the other, here’s your two rupee (drops it to the ground and it rolls under the auto). Take it if you want, but shame on you for behaving like that with such an old man who is just trying to make a living. How long will you go about cheating people like this, what do earn by doing all this? Do you think you will have a happy life? No, it will be miserable because people will curse you and curse you, and will do so, till you change you ways.”

I said this and just walked off from the spot, last I looked at him, he was staring in my direction in disbelief. I did not look again, I don’t know if he picked up that coin form the floor, I don’t know if he changed his ways, but I hope he did. The worst part, I am happy I told him whatever I did, but I am not sure if it was right thing to do.

Please get these people on Sach Ka Samna

I watched one or two episodes of Sach Ka Samna and I found it to be as good as the original (Moment of Truth) in terms of production and equally controversial with the questions. They have only invited celebrities till now in the show, but I have a few recommendations. Here goes:

Politician

(Nothing like a populist and corrupt politician to bring up the TRPs)

Q: Sirjee do you have black money or not

A: Bilkul nahi (Absolutely not)

Machine: Ye jawab galat hai (wrong answer)

Bangalore Auto Driver

(Been a while since I cribbed about auto guys. But there was this recent incident which I have to blog about. Will post it tomorrow)

Q: Do you take double of metre charge even in broad day light

A: Eh ya (Some of them are shameless you see)

Machine: Ye jawab sahi hai (answer’s right)

Host: Congratulations for winning 1,00,000 but shame on you for charging double rate.

@Ev

(Founder of Twitter)

Q: Do you think you will ever make money from Twitter

A: Can I tweet about this?

Host: No!

A: Okay then yes

Machine: Ye jawab galat hai (wrong answer)

Movies, suggested watching/Jul 19

Getting back to my list of movies worth watching. Those who haven’t read the last one. I suggest two movies at a time, no review, just a name and a link to IMDB page of the movie. So for this week:

Four Rooms

(Movie is narrated in four parts with a continuous story-line, but directed by four different directors. Tarantino being one of them)

Find Me Guilty

(The only Vin Diesel movie worth a watch, mainly because it’s not an action movie, but a comedy. Well, sort of. He plays the role of Cocaine dealer, part of an Italian Mafia)

Theme update; Thanks Noupe

noupe

Few of you, who regularly drop by, must have spotted a few changes in the theme of this blog. Let me get to this point straight, I won this theme in a contest organised by Noupe.com one of the best blogs around for CSS/HTML hacks and tips. I have been trying to learn a little more about the code that runs by blog and Noupe has been a big help till now. The contest was organised a while back along with theme creators like Woo themes. For the contest all I had to do was, say which theme I liked the most, why and what I would if I had that theme. Well turns out, folks at Noupe really liked my comment as a month later (when the contest finished) I was notified that I had won the theme. Getting used the theme has not been easy. It took a while for me to figure out the ‘Home” page rest have been pretty easy thanks top their support forum. Meanwhile I have changed the theme of my gaming blog too, the site uses a free theme from Woo themes. Lot of modification yet to be done to this site and the gaming one, so keep checking this space.

How i.in led to chupchap.in

I had promised here to narrate the long story behind this domain I bought and how I set it up. It all started with me being confused about what kind of domain I wanted to buy. Should it be chupchap.com, chupchap.in a shorter domain like chup.in or something even shorter. I just wasn’t sure; just indecisive. Yet another problem with young people these days I suppose. :-D

So what do most people do when they want a domain? Head to who.is to check if the domain they want is available and that’s what I did. I searched chupchap.com and chupchap.in, and to my pleasure, found that both of them were available. So what now? Should I go ahead and register them or waste more time searching for shorter, but not necessarily better domain? I decided to waste some more time.

So I thought if I wanted a magical domain name what would it be? The first domain name that came to my head was i.in. After all this blog is all about me; I hardly write about anyone else no?

So I searched and to my surprise (very very surprised) I found that it was still available. Oh My God, the shortest domain possible, a premium one and it’s available! So I headed straight to eWebguru, where my gaming blog is hosted. I booked it in three easy steps at around Rs1,600, which is a standard rate at the host.

I was rejoiced, after all I have a premium domain, I could start a impossible-to-make-profit-off URL shortening service, an email service or sell it off at a higher price. I was overjoyed. So overjoyed that I decided to share it with my followers at twitter. After a round of congratulatory tweets, someone pointed it out to me. It is impossible for me to own such a domain. Turns out, all one-character and two-character domains, are reserved by government and NIXI order, and are not available to the public. For example I could buy abc.in but not a.in or ab.in :-(

I was heart broken. After filing for a support ticket, which was answered in fifteen minutes, I was given an option to opt for any other .in domain. This time, I did not try to experiment. I opted for chupchap.in and by next day my domain was active. But every day when I visit my blog (to find that 25 people landed up on my blog and they came via image search aaargh!)I wish it was i.in and imagine having a four/five/six figure bank dollars (in dollars I mean).

If you are interested in setting up your blog/website, you can try out eWebguru where my blog is hosted. You will get a good deal if you follow this link. This link is part of their referral program which I have signed up for, but this post is in no way sponsored by them.
